Journal 1(Week 2:Guest Lecture)

My name is Chua Heng Yuan from Taylor’s Business School, currently undergoing Bachelor in Banking & Finance Semester 4. For the first week we don’t have any classes yet for Community Service as it will only started on Week 2. So our topics that we going to be focus on this semester is about Deaf community. The first lecture that started on this week was a guest lecture, as the first lecture talk was spoken by a guest speaker; Mr Mario Peters who is one of the founders of RC Deaf Missions Malaysia. The other founder of the organization is Miss Agnes Peters and this organizations functions to enhance the livelihoods of the deaf community, helping them to be confident entrepreneurs educating the public about the deaf. During the lecture, there are 2 ladies, Miss Chai Yun and her translator. Miss Chai Yun is a deaf person and she uses sign language to speak about RC Deaf Mission’s history and some of her life experience as deaf person, talked about how she learned all those sign language and contribution she made to the deaf community, alongside with her translator that help explained to us. After hearing all these stories, I think as many as we do learned that no matter how hard a person life can get, it will only get worse if you don’t do anything about it, there’s always an opportunity for making your life amazing. Although it was not easy for a person who has hearing disability, but Miss Chai Yun still managed to prove it she can achieve anything just like a normal person can do, proving that disabilities should never dampen a person’s desire to succeed. Through the lecture done by Mr. Mario, I learned that society especially our country has not been very supportive to the deaf community because they thought that people with hearing disability may not doing a good job because they’re perceived to be “slow” because of their hearing problem. And that’s the reason why RC Deaf Mission was founded in order to help the deaf community.

Journal 2 (Week 3:Sign Language Class)

So this week we going to have our first ever sign language class that organized by RC Deaf Mission Malaysia. Miss Chai Yun and her translator, Miss Anita were present to reach us about the basic sign of languages that are commonly used. It was my first ever experience and I think everyone was quite enjoying during the lesson. When Miss Chai Yun started to present, the whole class was in sudden silent as we’re focusing at what she teaching. Through the class there’s few sign that I found interesting such as the alphabets and numbers, now I knew that the pattern of the sign are mostly based on the shapes of the actual alphabets such as the word letter “A”, then the hand sign will be look alike the alphabet “A”. Other than that, at the same day we also had few mini games held in lecture hall. The first game would be Miss Chai Yun will do the sign herself and we student has to guess the answer, we all were having much fun on that day because this experience still new to all of us. Well, in order to learn well the sign languages we have to practice hard as practice makes perfect, later on that night I was determined to continue learning after I back home, then the next time I met a new friend that has hearing disability I can easily communicate with them.

Journal 3 (Week 4 & 5: Proposal Preparation)

During this week, we all students were given different projects to work on RC Deaf Mission Malaysia. As the assignment was based on group work , some of us doing the research of RC Deaf Mission, some were doing the proposal for improving their Facebook page, while my team are been assigned to work on proposal on how to improve their current official website in order to attract more audience. As the group leader of the team, I decided to make a new website that are similar to their official website but with much more interesting and colorful, my group member has Bin Hao, Hui Peng, Eelyn, Chong Wang, Wendy, Raveena and Arron. So our main mission to find ways to promote their official website so our thought is by creating a website and design it more nicer and included the same contents, the reason we do so is because it’s much easier and simplify for us to present our proposals later on as we can compare between our website and their official website. Luckily Ms Joyce Cheah did offered us a chance to go Amcorp Mall take a visit on the kiosk as well as the Deaf exhibition held during that day, so we went there took some of the pictures and we decided to upload it on the website we’re working on. During the time, it was quite tough for all of us to get work done together because we’re too many members in a group and we only develop one website. Luckily I did create a new account that was shared together so we can design the webpages anytime we want even we’re separated. We used the Wix the design the web pages because it is much easier as most of us are quite newbie in this. However, the most important thing in order to make a group work success is Team Work. With team work, it was much easier to get work done and I’ve believe the result in the end will be satisfied because we all contribute same effort on it.

There's the time came that we're going to present on that day, it was the day our hard work going to pay off as it’s the day we present our work that been working for so long. It was quite nervous at the moment because we’re the first group to present on this day. Although it is a group work but during presentation, there’s only need two presenter to present the proposal and me & Chong Wang will be the presenter for the day. Before the presentation even starting, my legs already started to shackle as this is my first time doing present in front of many students inside the lecture hall. Although I was quite nervous on that time and I did miss some point, but luckily I did managed to speak most of the important points to the audience as well as the markers of that day. Later on that day, the group with the best presentation will be awarded little gift by RC Deaf Mission’s people as appreciation. We didn’t win on that day but I’m proud to say that I’m happy enough to make RCDMM’s current website a little bit more interesting that it already was. At the same time, as the group leader, I was happy as well noted that the audiences and module lecturer were impressed with the group effort. It was such a great opportunity to look at the efforts and admire the creativity of other groups involved in that day.

Journal 4 (Week 6: RC Deaf Missions Charity Showcase)

So this is the week that we been assigned to do our last activity that is the charity booth. The booth was held at our campus which was just outside the lecture hall 21. Basically this event is to promote RC Deaf Mission this community to the public especially students in Taylor’s University as well as outsiders. So we all students were been separated in groups and we have to brainstorming together on how to make the booth as interesting as possible, of course there’s already some guideline or suggestion that Ms Joyce gave to us such as poster design, banner, marketing the product and so on. While at the time, me and my group members were in charge of the background of RC Deaf Missions, so it took me some time to figure out how to assign those work to all my members because we just have to do one poster that’s all. Well luckily I did managed to assign those work to them, they find those info for me and I’ll be the one compile it all and put it on the poster. If wasn’t because of our great team work spirit, I think we won’t have finished it on time.

The charity showcase was held on Jun 1st (Wednesday) 2pm afternoon. Although it say started at 2pm the showcase, but we have to reach campus early 2 hours as we have to set up the booth. As the time comes, a lot of students already been gathered outside the lecture hall 21 to see our showcase, the crowd was amazing. After a while, we then have to go inside lecture hall to hear the talk, the topic it’s about spreading the awareness of charity organization in Malaysia. After the talk, there’s Tea Break provided to all of us as well. As times goes by, the showcase ended at 4.30pm and felt like it’s enough for us because we had such amazing time during the showcase, never been expected the showcase was ended so soon. Through this showcase, I was very grateful as I get to know a lot of new friends and I get to enjoy the fun with them. If I were asked whether I will join such activity again, I will definitely say Yes!

These are the photos we took on that day
