My Reflections 

Internship : Week 1 & Week 2

                Time passes really fast, in just blink of an eye my 1 month semester break period had reached it ends, and there’s the time I have to flight back to Kuala Lumpur from hometown Sabah to continue my 5th semester. Fortunately that time isn’t back to university having classes and such things, it’s the start of my Internship.

                The company where I having my internship is Orchan Consulting Asia. This company is one of the Malaysia’s Public Relation agencies, which also the fastest growing agencies. Me and my two other friends Ben and Eelyn applied this company few months ago and luckily we’ve been approved during the interview back then.

 

          On 1st December 2014, here comes my first day of internship. It was a typical normal Monday which I have wake up early for class and so on, but this time’s different. I had to wake up really early just to get ready so I won’t late for work on the first day of my internship. The time I reached in the office, I was directly assigned to my own desk by my colleague Christina and she started to give me a brief about the rules and regulation and job duties of mine in the office. My job duties is quite different from my friends Ben and Eelyn them because I’m on the Finance Department while there’re on the Public Relations. My internship supervisor Craig Selby the Managing Director assigned me earlier on my last interview.

 

          So during the first week, I’ve been assigned to sort out the bills started from year 2010 until 2013 according to months first according to what my supervisor said. It was a big box which my supervisor took out from his office, inside the box include all the different kind of bills such as food bills, electricity, miscellaneous bills and so on through these 4 years which are not calculated and categorized yet. Eventually it was my duties to sort all it out and put into data into computer. So the first thing I had to do during that time is, I opened the box and took all the bills outside so I can start sort it out according to months, it took me about hours to finish sort it out though. Once I finished sort it out, I had to start key in the data into computer, thanks to my colleague Chin Sin whose also a Freelance Accountant showed me how to calculate expenses by using Microsoft Excel, it really made my job easier by using that software.

               

         

          It was never been easy for a finance person, I’ve used up the first week just to settle 2010 expenses, it took me quite some time. During the 2nd week, beside just doing my job in finance part, sometimes I’m also got the chance to join the meetings for Public Relations Department along with my friends them. Sometimes we’ll have to give some ideas regarding the project that we received, provide ideas that will contribute in making successful the event. So sometimes we took about whole day brainstorming together, even discuss until late night, but it was a fun experience for me though. So about how we settle our lunch, we usually go downstairs nearby restaurant and settle it, seldom took outside food unless all the restaurant is closed.

 

We got pets inside our office too haha.It's name was Oily.

This was the BIG box i mentioned earlier.It contains a lot of past year bills and so on. It does take me quite long time to sort it out XD

Internship : Week 3 & Week 4

                There it is my 3rd week of my intern in Orchan Consulting. This week we start to get a little bit busier than the last two week. As the Christmas holiday was coming soon, we have to rush out all the work before holiday came in. During this week, we had another meeting discussion night on Tuesday. The topic that we discussed on that night is about the recording of the meeting with MACROKIOSK CEO that my supervisor and colleague they attended last week, and as an intern, we need to contribute some of our ideas in it. At first I’m quite surprised been asked to join the discussion cause I was in Finance department, I never thought I’ll get that chance. By the time I received the mail sent from my supervisor, he said to me that that is how I start to learn the other aspects of their business which is start from the meeting that night, I guess maybe I mentioned it earlier that I wanted to learn more than finance in my intern that’s why I get the chance, I’m consider lucky enough to be involve in the meeting :D

 

          So the discussion that we’re working on is about the meeting of MACROKIOSK CEO, we need to think of any ideas to promote this company as a lot people didn’t know much about it. When we heard the recording of the meeting, as a consumer, we just knew that we’ve been using the company services since years ago but no one ever knows about it. The messages that sent to our mobile phones from unknown 5 digit number inform us the latest news or your flight ticket barcode, is actually them! To figure out any way to let consumer knows they are actually the company that working behind these services, in order to make it happen, our idea need to be think out the box. It was a long discussion night, took about 4 hours to finish it, although we still can’t get conclusion in the end but still, need to working on the ideas we figured out though.

 

           On the Wednesday night, the whole office got invited to a Christmas party organized by Sir KK Johan including me and my friends Ben and Eelyn. Venue was held at Nexus Connexion, which located at Bangsar South. It was a great night and we was having much fun during the party with our colleagues. By the following week, other than doing the account things, I’m started to get more in touch with PR stuff. My colleague Christina and i went out for media drop. For the term “media drop” meaning that we received the things from our client, and we have to deliver those things to their client, those clients are Bloggers. The purpose of delivering these things is to promote our client product through our website. It was quite interesting though during deliveries, as we have to go around PJ search their houses using the apps call WAZE, quite tiring but still fun.

Internship : Week 5 & Week 6

          In the 5th week of our internship, we only need to work on Monday and Tuesday (29th & 30th) as the rest of the days from 31st December until 4th January 2015 the office were closed. This was quite a long break as for Christmas holiday, and yet each of us were excited hearing such news *laugh out loud* :) 

 

          Unfortunately, we still need go to work on 29th & 30th though just can enjoy the 5 days holiday. During 29th of December, my colleague Christina brought me to attend a photoshoot for FLAVOURS magazine at Pavillion Mall, a restaurant named Spasso Milano, an Italian restaurant. When we reached there, first we met up with the business manager which also my colleague’s friend, then we start to talk about the photoshoot progress while waiting the photographer come. Since it’s a photoshoot for FLAVOURS magazine, so main target of photoshoot is the food, and of course the Chef that cooked the food. During the photoshoot progress, the photoshoot are quite serious when taking the photo of the food, as he need to find a suitable angle for taking the shoot, it wasn’t easy as it looks. The whole progress took about 2 hours to done it, found it quite funny when thought about using 2 hours took picture the food and the Chef only haha.

 

      On the next day, since it’s the last day of work before holidays came, so we didn’t have much work during that particular day. Unless I went out with Christina delivering the rest of SCS Butter cookies to bloggers. On this day, we have about 8 bloggers need delivered to, so we took about almost 5 hours to finish it, from KL to Puchong, Puchong to Subang, and Subang back to KL, it was a tiring day for me and Christina, lastly I end up sleep in the car during deliveries though. During that night, we had a Orchan Festive Get Together held at Kuchai Lama, Samet Thai restaurant, the whole office were invited including Orchan ex staff. We did had great fun that day, had little bit of Champagne and various types of Thai Food, and most importantly we had Christmas exchange gift as well!

       On 5th January, here’s come the day we start to back work again. Well actually quite frustrating when think about it, but still, we need to wake up early that morning and back to work. So, on the 5th day of year 2015, there’s a little change I my job duties, since I’ve already finished most of the accounting in the office (bills from 2010 to 2013), my supervisor changed me to PR department. Actually I was not truly change to that department, but I’m getting a little bit touch of PR stuff. So the first thing I do was, updating the media list By doing so, I need to called up any of the company on the list given, those company which their details are not complete, I have to call each of the company operator and ask for the details. At first I’m nervous as I didn’t ever called up any client before, especially in English, but after a few times I’m adapt to it. Besides calling on phones, there’s another way to get the details too, but this quite take some time. I can directly just go to their website just search for the details, and if I’m lucky, I can find all of it in less than minute, but most of the time took me hours *urgh* L So during this particular week, I’ve been doing PR stuff most of the time, looking forward to see what I’m going to do on the next week  :)

Internship : Week 7 & Week 8

            Time passes really fast, I’ve been through 8 weeks of internship in the company. Sure do lot of things happened during these time, sometimes stress because of the work and sometimes enjoy. During 7th week of my internship in the company, that week is the most stressful week for me and my friend Ben & Eelyn.

 

            So, this is what actually happened. At first, my friend them been given a task few weeks ago and asked to finish it as earlier as they can. But during that week our company supervisor want it to be finished by the end of that week, if both of them didn’t finish it in time they’ll have to leave the company. The reason why our supervisor said to them like that was because the task they’re doing are supposed to finish it earlier few weeks ago, but didn’t thought that they took longer than he thought, that’s what it make our supervisor angry about. That week probably is their busiest week ever. Although I’m not involved in the task they did, but I’m still hoping that they can finish it in time so that their internship are safe. Unfortunately, at the end of that week, they still haven’t finish their task in time, Eelyn was fired by our supervisor because according to what I heard, that was her 2nd time been warned by our supervisor but Ben is 1st time, so his job was safe. Although Ben still keep his internship job, but still the supervisor gave him the 2nd chance to finish the task in few days, this time I was asked to lend a hand on it. Luckily, we did finish it right at the day of deadline, sure lesson was learned though.

 

            Right after that day, different task was given for both of us. I’ve been transferred to the marketing side of company which leaded by my colleague Christina. First I was asked to do a research on public holidays and upcoming events in Malaysia & Singapore. I had to put in all the information in a table in Microsoft Word and send it to my colleague in email. Few days after, me and my friend was asked to do research on Spoon Health, while I’m doing research on the founder of the company. Once we done research it, we need to write up a profile summary of the person, mentioned what they did in their early life and how did they build up the company. It took us about whole day doing the research though, but still It is my first experience, and I’m enjoying it.

 

            The day after, me and my friend had chance to attend a meeting with our company new client. During the meeting, we were talking about how to promote our client company to the public, which this is what our company specialize in. Right after the meeting, then there’s we started our discussion back in the office. So I’ve been thought some ideas, three of them only 1 working though. But still, I feel a little bit proud of myself since then, because I never thought my idea will worked haha.

 

 

            

Internship : Week 9 & Week 10

              In just blink of an eye, there’s only few weeks left to done with my Internship. Time flies tho, that’s the fact *sigh*. During the Week 9 & Week 10 in my Internship, these two weeks are busy as usual just like previous last two week. Most of the things we are keeping busy on was the researching, discussion & so on. Well, I am quite enjoying during the research tho, as I like finding lots of thing over the internet, like it or not, I am just enjoying clicking the search button on the browser. Internet is vast, go nuts!

 

              So here’s the thing we’ve been working on during that two weeks, recently we’ve working on with our company few clients and so because of that we have to do a lot of in depth research about these clients. Including research of accommodation in Penang, Ceiling Fan industry in Malaysia and so on. It was not an ordinary weeks for me and Ben during Internship period, as we continuously doing research for about two weeks long. Although things are not going well as I was expected, doing minor mistake during research and so on, but still, I do learn a lot from those mistakes I’ve done, and I improve myself to do it better in future.

 

              Besides doing research, during some day on that week. Our company held an event on Mid Valley shopping mall, it was a baking pineapple tarts demonstration made by SCS Butter which also invited the pastry chef, media & bloggers to the venue. It was my first experience attending our company event and had the chance to get in touch with the media. The whole process was fun for me, as colleague Christina and our Boss was the main host of the event. While in the same time me & Ben was responsible on the registration table, registration for those incoming media & bloggers. In just few hour times, the event ended successfully and thankfully, we got celebrated later on that night.
